A Journeyman’s Encounters

This second portfolio is the embodiment of my philosophy that art is purely up to the creator and what they want to do with it. I wanted to branch out but still stay with at least one thing that I was comfortable with which was the theme of nature. The birds on the wooden boxes was inspired by a fellow classmate after she unveiled her works on a thicker wooden frame and I really liked it. The process of making the frames was a feat in it of itself because I had no idea what I was doing and ended up wasting a lot of materials. The tone of this portfolio is meant to have a lighter feel and be more optimistic.

The Inspiration behind this portfolio came when I was playing a board game called Wingspan with my family. The game is about birds and honestly, I forgot most of the rules, so the next time I play I am going to have to learn the rules again. I learned that night that I have a love of birds, and couple that with my love of the color blue, I decided I was going to explore different types of blue birds and blue flowers.

The completion of my second portfolio was like taking a second breath. I felt like I could breathe once this was completed. Although I had enjoyed the process of creating this portfolio, during the process, I somehow almost lost the passion for it. I couldn’t believe I had it in me to create two full portfolios that I could proudly submit to Scholastics Art & Writing.

I knew I had wanted to expand my exploration of art further and decided that oil paints are the most fundamental medium. When someone thinks of art, they often come to think of famous oil paintings, and the medium itself allows for so many possibilities. Knowing this, my second portfolio had to be oil paintings.
